Generating Solar Electricity (Solar PV)

Among the best technologies of the modern age is Solar Electricity. Like the panels on so many solar powered devices these days, a Solar PV (Photovoltiac) System generates electricity from sunlight. By using a Solar PV system, more than enough energy can be generated to power your whole house. In the day time, the system generates excess electricity that can also be sold back to the national grid for purchase by other consumers. At night time, when there is no sun to power the panels, any electricity needed can be bought from the grid. A system as low as 2kWh provides plenty of electricity for the majority of households.
Due to recent government initiatives, the system owner receives 41.3p for every unit their system generates, even if they use this themselves! An extra 3p is paid on top for any units bought back for resale by the grid.

Who would say no to:

  • Daytime Electricity for free! This represents a minimum saving of £200 every year.
  • £1000 tax free income each year for all units of electricity generated for the 25 years from the date of installation.
  • NO maintenance costs.

Start up info?

  • The only potential shock (unless you touch the bare wires of course!) is the initial cost to install the system, although the outlay pays off with time - both financially and environmentally.
The system will have paid for itself within 10 years.
  • The cost to fit a Solar system at a residence is between £7500 and £20000 dependent on system rating.
  • It continues to provide a tax free income for all of the 25 years, provided it is fitted before 31 March 2012.

Generating Hot Water: Solar Thermal System

Solar Thermal Systems are designed to produce hot water for domestic use.

  • A home system will cost between £3500 and £12000.
  • It provides up to 70% of all the hot water and reduces household bills significantly.

The government introduces the RHI payments scheme in April 2012 to reward system owners for any hot water they produce using Solar energy in this way and it will be to be approximately £350-£400 yearly.
